Purple Revolution

"...Before there was a Purple Revolution in Iraq or an Orange Revolution in Ukraine or a Cedar Revolution in Lebanon, there was the Rose Revolution in Georgia."

-George W. Bush, in Tbilisi, Georgia, May 10, 2005 (read story here).

Brief history recap...

Rose Revolution- the PEACEFUL 2003 revolution in the country of Georgia that displaced president Eduard Shevardnadze and served to inspire other PEACEFUL demonstrations of people-power around the world.

Orange Revolution- the series of PEACEFUL protests and political events that took place throughout Ukraine in response to allegations of massive corruption, voter intimidation and direct electoral fraud during Ukraine's Presidential Run-off Election of November 21, 2004, which led to the ouster of the government and installment of a popularly elected democratic government.

Cedar Revolution- the chain of PEACEFUL demonstrations and popular civic action in Lebanon (mainly Beirut) triggered by the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005, that resulted in the government's resignation and the pullout of Syrian troops from Lebanon.

Purple Revolution- phrase popularized by U.S. President George W. Bush to describe the elections in Iraq that took place after military invasion and occupation of Iraq by the U.S.

Definition of Doublespeak
- "Doublespeak is language deliberately constructed to disguise or distort its actual meaning, often resulting in a "communication bypass". Such language is associated with governmental, military, and corporate institutions. Doublespeak may be in the form of bald euphemisms ("downsizing" for "firing of many employees") or deliberately ambiguous phrases ("wet work" for "assassination"). Doublespeak is distinguished from other euphemisms through its deliberate usage by governmental, military, or corporate institutions." -definition from Wikipedia.org

"Thousands of terrified Uzbeks waiting to flee across the border into Kyrgyzstan stormed government buildings, torched police cars and attacked border guards Saturday in a second day of violence spawned by an uprising against the iron-fisted rule of U.S.-allied President Islam Karimov."
"White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Friday, “The people of Uzbekistan want to see a more representative and democratic government. But that should come through peaceful means, not through violence.”" (emphasis added).

What? Democracy by peaceful means? Unheard of!

That's right! Another bloodless movement that replaced a government (and started the whole colorful naming of peaceful revolutions). Now the Bushies have hijacked the term to mean bloody and illegal invasions of countries. Maybe we can call the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR the "Poppy Revolution", the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia the "Sarong Revolution", etc.
