Krazy Kate

KateJewell
This is a photo of my friend Kate Jewell that I stole from Friendster. Nasty habit. Just wait 'til I get sued. By Friendster or by Kate. I'd say this photo doesn't do her justice (can you tell she's getting a PhD in History at BU?), but in a way it captures that unpredictable Southern zest of hers.
Kate invited me to a beer at Charlie's tonight. It's been absolutely ages since we've hung out. Both being grad students, we have become near professionals at putting off social engagements. We traded notes on our grad student woes. I was amazed by her thesis theme. Can't reveal too much, as it isn't yet published work, but it involves Tennessee industrialists during the New Deal era. Can you just picture the cover photo of her best-seller? Cigars and mint-juleps for sure. But seriously, this is great stuff considering some of her primary sources are in her own family (no no, they worked for the fat cats, one of the main fat cats, in fact). Anyways, it's always great talking shop with Kate. She grabs my test-tubed brain and for an hour puts in back into the context of human history. You know, humanity? She is also a recommender of good books. The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity, by Jill Lepore, for example.
Well, looking foward to our next exchange. We'll be taking notes for her next project: A study on guys who go to bars by themselves to watch sports. Fascinating!
