Hypocrisy as foriegn policy in the Middle East

L'hypocrisie est un hommage que le vice rend a la vertu.
[English: Hypocrisy is the homage which vice renders to virtue.]
-Francois Duc de la Rochefoucauld (1613-1680)

An Italian journalist kidnapped in Iraq was wounded and almost killed by notoriously trigger-happy American troops as she was being released. Killed was an Italian itelligence officer who was bringing the journalist to safety.

This is making headlines because a journalist from a country allied to the US in its invasion and occupation of Iraq was almost killed by American fire. But hardly any press is given to the THOUSANDS of innocent Iraqi civilians that have been killed in 2 years by Americans troops who shoot first and ask questions later. I saw some scary footage of this on Frontline recently. There are also some mortifying photos of such an incident here, where two parents are shot to death in front of their childen "by accident." At least they have been liberated. Right.

In other news of American style hyprocisy, our dear President Bush is oh-so-subtly warning Syria by saying, quote:
"We want that democracy in Lebanon to succeed, and we know it cannot succeed so long as she is occupied by a foreign power."

Excuse me?
Well. While I agree that it's time for Syria to pull out of Lebanon, doesn't it seem like the US is the last one to tell another country to stop occupying a country in the Middle East? At least Syria's occupation ended a civil war, not started one.
Replace "Lebanon" with "Iraq", Mr. President, and see how your comment sounds.

Good idea to link the country names to Wikipedia entries. This greatly helps geopolitically challenged readers like me!!
